Having a baby at 40(that’s not old)- A family’s story - Seattle Family Storyteller

I LOVE hearing and sharing stories from families about their journey to parenthood. It just adds another layer to the images, and, quite frankly makes me want to cry sometimes. I love this inspiring story about a couple who has been together for 16 years, married for 7 when they had this little one.

I always say, families are a piece of unique art. None are like the other, and these family stories further prove the point.

I LOVE THIS FAMILY. Brett is a tried and true PNW man, and Caroline is from New Orleans. She’s got a touch of that southern drawl that I love so. damn. much. Here is a little piece of their story -in Caroline’s words.

“We didn’t really decide to have a baby until I was 39 and my husband was 40, so we were already considered “old” with low chances of conceiving. After we tried to conceive unsuccessfully over a year, our doctors told us that for multiple reasons, including our age, we would need assistance (e.g, IVF). We weren't sure whether we wanted to do IVF, so we made an intro appointment with the IVF docs just to see what they had to say. In the meantime, we stopped thinking about our lives with a baby and did our normal thing—we were very happy with our life just the two of us. It was summer so we were traveling a lot and making plans for bigger trips abroad later in the year. We even started looking at purchasing property outside of the city to build a small second home in the mountains.

Then after a Labor Day camping trip, I realized something was off and took a very cheap pregnancy test on a whim. It immediately showed a positive result so I took another one right away and got another positive. I ran into our bedroom with the little stick, screaming at my husband to wake up. We were both in total shock. I went to the drug store to get a more reliable test, which was positive too. We spent the next few weeks in happy disbelief.

My pregnancy ended up being very easy and I enjoyed every minute of it. We had to cancel our trips abroad and postpone buying a second property, but we are having a blast with our little unexpected addition.”

World, this is Sigge Van Satterlund. With a name like that- he will either be a famous Rockstar in a death metal band, or a famous world explorer or scientist. Or both.
