A Courageous Man’s Journey to Becoming a Single Father - Seattle Family Photography
“But it's also about unearthing a love that you never knew existed; whose name you doubt you'll ever be able to pronounce”
When I heard about a man who went to great lengths to have a baby on his own, my heart just swelled. I’m a total sucker for single dads. But this story was unique, and so is this man. I will let him share his beautiful story in his own words.
Lowell on his journey to becoming a father…
"We can't help you."
Those were the words of the first IVF clinic I approached, and the second, and the...
I had wanted a kid for so long...decades actually...but there was always a new work assignment...a new city.
The ice cold reality slapping hard now. Seems men can also age out in the quest for a child.
Eventually I found a clinic willing to bet on me; but by then the hunt for a donor proved impossible. Genetic traits always knife you at the most awkward times.
Finally, I found a donor and a surrogate. The journey was underway.
Nine months of secrets...nine months of dread.
Is it fair to bring a child into this world...at this age?
Not too long to learn: newborns are the wisest people around. They look at you with a discerning eye. Nothing is automatic with them. Eventually they give themselves over to you and your world is never the same.
We've only known each other for three months. While I still stumble in the act of getting to know her; she shows me she knows me through and through in all ways...for all time.
Friends warned me that having a child was like cutting your chest open and allowing your heart to run free.
I agree.
But it's also about unearthing a love that you never knew existed; whose name you doubt you'll ever be able to pronounce.
She teaches me daily. She delivers love wrapped in a coo...and teaches me in a smile that lovers, family and friends never could quite muster...
"You're all I need."
Thank you SO MUCH Lowell from the bottom to the top of my heart for sharing your story with us. You are so inspiring and I am forever grateful to get to share your story with you.
This is one beautiful and lucky little baby.
